A failure in the cooling system can lead to overheating and catastrophic engine failure. Several of the primary cooling components are prone to failure within 60k miles (or less in many cases). ![]() The Z4 cooling system is much like that of the sister 3 series. This cooling system package is for the 2003-2005 Z4 Roadster. This is a customizable cooling system overhaul kit, which starts off with the basic radiator and water pump and can be configured to replace all the M54 common cooling system failure parts in one package. A proper bleeding procedure must be followed with the new electric pump. This package of OE/OEM parts covers everything with Original BMW coolant offered to finish off the job. Since this technology is relatively new for BMW, therefore the lifecycle of the pump isn't yet known, we have been recommending replacement every 80-100k miles. How to avoid a water pump failure in the future? Replacing the water pump as part of a regular interval schedule will ensure you always have a functioning pump in place. Fortunately, the engine computer will force a shut down or reduce power if a problem occurs, preventing catastrophic engine damage. And if the electronics are at fault, there is no way to rebuild or repair it. ![]() The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. No longer is the pump spinning all the time from an engine-driven belt. That means the system can actually stop the pump when warmer temperatures are needed. The engine computer dictates how much fluid needs to be pumped through the system depending on the load. ![]() The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. Not only must it provide cooling for the engine, but it's also pumping fluid used to cool the automatic transmission oil. In fact, to get to the thermostat, BMW expects you to remove the water pump. On the N51/N52 cars (128i, 325i 328i, 330i, 525i, 528i, 530i) the water pump and theremostat are mounted together. ĥ.This packages covers the major components you would install along with a new water pump or thermostat. To avoid that big mess, I followed this link's instructions. I have read there are some cheap aftermarket ones that fail within a short period of time.Ĥ.) Removing the drain plug from the block. I ended up taking a racket extension from below and taping it out with a hammer.ģ.) If you are going to replace the expansion tank, I recommend buying the OEM one. I ended up doing several steps multiple times.Ģ.) Removing the expansion tank - I have removed mine twice now. I did the expansion tank, then the water pump, thermostat, and hoses, then the radiator. Also, please note, when removing the radiator cooling fan, in figure 8, there was no T25 Torx fastener on the left bottom side (this is where the expansion tank mount is). Please be aware, this write up is for a MZ4 and does not show you how to remove the expansion tank, the expansion tank mount, and a couple other things that need to be done (the You Tube video will). This write up will show you how to drain and fill your cooling system, remove the radiator cooling fan, and remove the radiator. I used a write up from Pelican Parts and a You Tube video to replace the radiator in my 2003 3.0i automatic.
